Trainer Profile
For over three decades, Gary and Dean Alexander have been a dominant force in horse racing. Originally from South Africa, the brothers built one of the country’s most successful racing stables, training over 1,600 winners, including more than 100 Group and Listed race victors. Their achievements include setting the South African record for the most stakes earned in a single day, an extraordinary feat accomplished on April 27, 2000, when their runners claimed the South African Derby (G1), Champion Stakes (G1), and Gold Bowl (G2). They also trained six winners in one day at Turffontein, South Africa’s premier racetrack, on two separate occasions.
Born into a racing family, the Alexanders inherited their passion from their father, Duncan, a highly successful jockey. Gary was granted his trainer’s license in 1982 and was joined by Dean in 1990, forming a formidable partnership that consistently ranked among the best in South Africa. Gary’s accolades include a Special Achievement Award from the Racing Association in 2006, a Lifetime Achievement Award in 2012, and recognition as Trainer of the Year in 2000 after securing 13 Group race wins in a single season. Their success saw them finish in the top three of the National Trainers’ Log multiple times.
Moving to Australia, Gary and Dean have embraced a new chapter in their careers at the state-of-the-art Murray Bridge training facility. The South Australian government’s investment in developing world-class racing infrastructure made the move an exciting opportunity for the brothers, who wasted no time in making an impact, winning their first race with just their second Australian runner.
With a lifetime of success in the sport, the Alexanders continue to uphold their reputation for excellence. Their expertise in conditioning elite racehorses, combined with their international experience, positions them as key players in South Australian racing. As they settle into their new base, they remain committed to producing top-quality thoroughbreds, ensuring their legacy as leading trainers continues on Australian soil.
