In 2001, Andrew Gluyas began his career in horse racing, joining Australian Hall of Fame Trainer Leon Macdonald at his Morphettville stables.

As the years passed, his dedication and skill became evident, and in the 2009/10 season, Leon welcomed Andrew as his training partner. Together, they forged a formidable team, securing over 560 winners, including a Group 1 victory with Southern Speed in the 2011 Caulfield Cup.

After training in partnership for over a decade, Andrew stepped into the role of Head Trainer for Macdonald Gluyas Racing in the 2023/24 season. His transition was seamless, and his talent was immediately evident when he captured the Group 1 VRC Victoria Derby with Goldrush Guru—an achievement that solidified his reputation as a top-tier trainer.

Based at Morphettville, the Macdonald Gluyas stables offer a prime location adjacent to the racecourse, allowing horses to be walked to the track instead of transported by float. This accessibility enhances training efficiency and race-day preparation, reinforcing Andrew’s commitment to excellence.

Beyond his racing career, Andrew and Sue Macdonald (Leon’s daughter) have three sons: Joe, a qualified teacher who now works alongside Andrew in managing the stables; Darcy, a university student; and Conor, who balances his law studies with assisting at the stables. A man of many talents, Andrew is also a qualified electrician and also played Division 1 Baseball for Glenelg Baseball Club as their number one catcher.

Today, Andrew stands among the top five trainers in South Australia. Alongside his trusted stable foreperson, Mollie Knowles, he continues striving for success at the highest level. His dedication, work ethic, and ability to perform on racing’s biggest stages ensure that his winning ways will continue for years to come.
